EXPERIENCE—still the best teacher.
— Gene Hoyt
During my travels and many speaking events hunters are always
asking for tips or secrets to help them become better
hunters. The truth is there are really no secrets or tricks, you
just have to pay attention and learn from your mistakes. Hunters
across the country will tell you the greatest learning tool is
experience. I will share one tip though shared with me many
years ago by my friend Preston Pittman, the Turkey Hunting
Legend.
The tip is the three P’s patience, persistance, and
positive thinking. During a recent hunting trip to Kansas I
hunted with Brandon Fortenberry, son of David Fortenberry my
partner in Crossland Game Calls and Ministries. Brandon was able
to harvest a 140 class 8 point which any deer hunter knows is a
fine whitetail. Brandon’s ability to take this trophy went
farther than his archery or woodsmanship skills. He was patient
in that he passed smaller bucks and held out for a trophy. He
was persistant in that he did not give up when the hunt was
winding down and it appeared his tag would go
unfilled.
Finally, he kept thinking positively in that he carried
his archery equipment and kept hunting right down to the last
minute of the hunt. If your looking for a tip there you have
it, use what Brandon used patience, persistance, and positive
thinking and you will be a more sucessful hunter.
